Three of a kind

Today I thought I’d share some exercises I’ve been doing as part of my practice and play. For the first image I drew the three figures without looking at the paper, for the second I gave myself just one minute to sketch each figure and for the third I spent a little more time and corrected a couple of mistakes afterwards. All three images have their qualities and flaws and exercises such as these are a helpful way of seeing which lines and styles work best.

Keeping the pen moving

“Keep the pen moving.” An excellent creative writing teacher I once had used to sign off with this line and it’s great advice for artists as well as writers. Sometimes the most important thing is to just keep at it, and that’s what I’m doing at the moment. So with that in mind here are some rather blurry photos of what I’ve been painting lately.

I’ve been having trouble putting pen/pencil/paint to paper lately and I think it’s because I’m being a bit too precious about everything. So today is all about play; about getting back in touch with the materials I love and just messing around with colour and texture.
