Goat (LBoS)

lbosgoat12Finally, a new image on here, even though it’s actually one I did at the end of last year. This is the cover for Last Box of Sparklers’ EP Stage Fright, Summer Night, featuring a gorgeous goat I met in New Zealand.

Lion – Last Box of Sparklers

Another music-related post – this time the cover art for the heart-breakingly beautiful Lion EP from Last Box of Sparklers. You can listen to it on Spotify (https://open.spotify.com/album/3udJrWT86gBUBBnSULeIjj) and Bandcamp (http://lastboxofsparklers.bandcamp.com/album/lion), and I really recommend that you do!

The Incredible Disappearing Boy

It’s been quiet on the art front lately, what with having a dissertation to research and write, so when I saw that The Incredible Disappearing Boy (http://incredibledisappearingboy.com/) needed artwork for their debut EP I was gutted that I didn’t have time to get involved. Imagine my surprise then, when I was asked if my painting Red Sky could be used for the cover! I’ve been listening to the EP all weekend and am so happy to be involved (in a very small way) with such fantastic music!

Another LBoS cover!

Watercolour pencils + wet paintbrush + hand-drawn lettering + template from previous covers + Photoshop = the latest cover for Last Box of Sparklers. Sometimes it’s good to keep things simple, especially when there are dissertation proposals to write and poems to analyse! Last Box of Sparklers album cover

Time for another Last Box of Sparklers cover! Erik wanted a gun this time, something I was less than enthusiastic about. I like trees and birds and the sea and nice things like that. So I compromised and drew one of those joke guns – the ones that have a flag with the word ‘Bang’ that pops out when the trigger is pulled. I went about it in my usual fashion: sketching first with pencil then drawing over with fine-liner. I used watercolour pencils next and was intending to paint afterwards but I liked the texture and so left it at that. After scanning it was time for lettering on Photoshop, the most time-consuming part of the process. Below is the work in progress and the final result. You can listen to the album here: Last Box of Sparklers – Put a Gun To My Head But Don’t Scare Me!

“Before the Breakdown”

A little while ago I posted that I was up to something exciting. That thing was an EP cover for the Swedish band Sun & The Rain Men, which I made with a mixture of painting and Photoshop. Here it is! (Sun & The Rain Men – Before The Breakdown)

Before the Breakdown - Sun + the Rain Men

Flash, bang!

It’s only half past five but it’s already dark as night here. There’s thunder and lightning, strong winds and rain lashing down: a really dramatic end to a smashing week! I worked so much and so hard that my body hurt all over come Saturday. But I also made it to two big gigs at Liseberg, the theme park in the middle of Gothenburg. On Wednesday I saw Patti Smith and yesterday (Saturday) I watched Snoop Dogg. I feel a little guilty that I’m not spending more time drawing and painting but I know it’s there for me when I feel like it, so for now I’m just enjoying stocking up on inspiring sights and sounds.

Death Songs (Part Two)

Here’s the finished cover for the Last Box of Sparklers album (which you can listen to here http://lastboxofsparklers.bandcamp.com/album/death-songs-part-two and here Last Box of Sparklers – Death Songs (Part Two)).

Death Songs (Part Two)

Only Sleeping

Today I’m working on an album cover for Last Box of Sparklers, which involves a watercolour painting of a dead bluebird and lots of Photoshop lettering. Drawing dead birds is a pretty miserable activity so I’m trying to believe that they’re only sleeping. Despite the fact that I’m using internet references rather than drawing from ‘life’, my mind is still flooded with memories of all the fragile baby chickens and pigeons and starlings that I’ve met over the years. Only Sleeping

Death Songs (Part One)

Now that it’s released I can share the cover I did for the latest Last Box of Sparklers EP (https://lastboxofsparklers.bandcamp.com/album/death-songs-part-one/ and Last Box of Sparklers – Death Songs (Part One)). I like to use my own experiences in  my art as much as possible and for almost all my bird pictures I’ve spent time watching and photographing birds and then used those photos for reference. Getting to know a bird’s character makes it easier and more enjoyable to create a good portrait. For this cover I’ve painted a vulture and unfortunately I’ve never met one in real life so I had to resort to the internet. Vultures are fascinating creatures with a lot of symbolism surrounding them – a perfect subject. As always, I sketched the bird in pencil first, then drew over the ‘right’ lines with a waterproof pen. Then it was time for watercolours and I especially enjoyed painting the texture of  the vulture’s wrinkly neck. On Photoshop I added a plain dark background and my own lettering and the result is my favourite LBoS cover yet!
